Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology, Indore found that Epstein Barr Virus (EBV), a cancer-causing virus, can affect the brain cells and cause neurological disorders. The team of researchers used the Raman micro-spectroscopy technique, to understand the impact of EBV on brain cells, and biomolecules such as fatty acids, carbohydrates, and protein components, leading to neurological disorders of the central nervous system, including brain cancer.

The study published in ACS Chemical Neuroscience showed that viral infection caused a timely and gradual change in various biomolecules in the neuronal cells. Dr. Hem Chandra Jha, group leader from the Infection Bioengineering group at IIT, Indore, stated that the team observed an increase in the lipid, cholesterol, proline, and glucose molecules under the influence of the virus. He also added that the study also helped in establishing Raman micro-spectroscopy as a low-expenditure and non-invasive technique to perform studies on virus-associated complications in clinical settings.
